Weddings

In most cases wedding ceremonies conducted overseas are 'Civil Ceremonies' and are usually performed by a local registrar. Overseas weddings are legally recognised in the U.K as long as the marriage has been conducted under the law of the country in which it took place. However, any marriage solemnised abroad, in accordance with the laws of a foreign country, cannot be registered in the U.K.

It is possible in some cases for the record of an overseas marriage to be kept at:

The Office for National Statistics (ONS)
General Register Office
Overseas Section
Smedley Hydro
Trafalgar Road
Southport
PR8 2HH

Telephone: 0151 - 471 4801

If you are at all concerned about the legality of an overseas wedding, then please check with your local solicitor.
